The Shawshank Redemption - Rock Hammer - UPDATED VERSION to match real auctioned off hammer
Three different hammers were made for the film. The first (stage 1) was a brand new looking hammer. This version was seen on screen when Red first received it, and when Andy used it on the wall for the first time. The second (stage 2) version was slightly worn down. Softer edges on the handle and a more used look overall. The third version (stage 3) was the version that the police found in the water where Andy swam to his escape. This was, as Red put it, "worn down to a nub".
All of my rock hammers up until now have been modeled off the hero hammer as first seen on screen. The stage 1 hammer. Brand new as Red took it out to look at it for the first time before giving it to Andy.
The hammer in this listing is the "stage 2" hammer. This hammer was modeled by an expert prop maker (Sarednab) using precise and detailed reference sources. A real screen used hammer was auctioned off recently and the catalogued information available was documented in a way that allows a perfect 1:1 match of the original. Photos of the auctioned hammer are the last two in this listing. Used to create this hammer were these very, very detailed close up photos of the real prop when it was auctioned off, and this is a spot on match. This hammer was built from the ground up to be a real working hammer. Forged in a coal oven and heat treated, solid red oak and steel, this is the most accurate version of the stage 2 hammer ever produced.
The first 4 photos in this listing are of the piece that you will receive. The last two photos are of the real rock hammer from the movie to show accuracy
